Between winter road salt and coastal salt air, Rhode Island is harder on vehicles than most states. Here is a realistic schedule.
The honest answer is that it depends on where the car lives and how it is used — but 'whenever it looks dirty' is the wrong trigger. By the time damage is visible, the work needed to reverse it costs far more than the maintenance that would have prevented it.
The Rhode Island problem
Two things make this state unusually demanding. The first is winter road treatment: brine and rock salt get tracked into carpets and door sills, then sit there for months because short trips never generate enough heat to dry the cabin out. The second is salt air, which affects anyone within a few miles of the bay — Newport, Jamestown, Warwick's shoreline and the East Providence waterfront especially.
Salt is corrosive in both forms. On paint it accelerates oxidation and etching. In carpet it crystallises, abrades the fibres from the inside, and eventually bleaches the colour out permanently.
A schedule that actually works
For a daily driver parked outdoors, a maintenance wash every four to six weeks keeps contaminants from bonding to the paint. A full interior detail twice a year — once after winter, once at the end of summer — resets what the vacuum cannot reach. Protection, whether ceramic coating or a paint sealant, is worth reapplying on the schedule the product specifies rather than waiting for the water to stop beading.
If the car is garaged and only sees weekend use, you can stretch those intervals considerably. If it carries pets, children, tradespeople's tools or beach gear, tighten them.
The one appointment that matters most
If you only book one detail a year, make it the one in early spring. Removing winter salt before summer humidity sets in prevents the two problems that generate most of our rescue jobs: permanent carpet staining and the musty smell that comes from damp, salted padding.
Booking that appointment before the spring rush means you get a slot when you want it rather than six weeks later.
