'Interior detail' is one of the least standardised terms in the industry. One shop means a vacuum and a wipe-down; another means six hours of extraction and surface work. Knowing what to expect is the only way to compare quotes fairly.
Work top-down, always
Any interior detail that starts with the carpets is being done in the wrong order. Dust and debris fall — so the headliner, pillars, visors and dashboard come first, and the floor comes last. Reversing that order guarantees you finish by dropping dirt onto surfaces you already cleaned.
The dry stage
Before any liquid touches the interior, everything loose has to come out. That means a full vacuum with the seats moved through their full travel, compressed air through the vents, seams and seat rails, and attention to the gaps beside the centre console where debris collects invisibly.
Skipping the dry stage is the most common shortcut. Shampooing over loose grit turns it into mud and pushes it deeper into the padding.
Matching product to material
Leather, vinyl, Alcantara, cloth and piano-black plastic all need different chemistry. An all-purpose cleaner strong enough to lift grease from a rubber floor mat will dry out leather and haze soft-touch plastic. A real interior detail uses several products and a spot test before committing to any surface.
The places that separate good from average
Seat rails and the tracks underneath them. Seat-belt webbing, pulled out fully and cleaned along its length. Vent louvres, individually. Door pockets and cup-holder inserts, removed where possible. The seam between the windscreen and the dashboard. Nobody notices these when they are clean — everybody notices when they are not.
Finishing
Leather conditioned rather than coated in shine. Plastics returned to a factory matte finish, not a greasy gloss that attracts dust and reflects into the windscreen at night. Glass cleaned last, streak-free, including the top edge of the side windows that sits hidden inside the door.
